Dessa’s Official Music Video for ‘5 Out Of 6’ Out Now
Chime World Tour continues – new dates announced in the US, including LA, NYC & Nashville
‘Chime’ debuts at #3 on Billboard’s Independent Charts
Rapper, singer, and author, Dessa, shares the official music video for her single, “5 out of 6,” from her album ‘Chime,’ today. Directed by Raquel Marvez, the video serializes a moment before Dessa takes the stage before a performance. Watch the video.
Dessa also announces the next leg of her “Chime World Tour.” Following a recent trip to Austin for SXSW, Dessa will perform a slew of Midwest, European, and Pacific Northwest dates, bringing her theatrical, and unapologetically bold live show to cities including LA, Nashville, and NYC. She’ll return to Minneapolis for another grandiose, multi-media collaboration with the Grammy-winning Minnesota Orchestra on October 5 and 6. All dates are listed below.
Before heading out on the final US leg of her tour, Dessa will perform as the musical guest on “Live from Here with Chris Thile” on April 7, igniting America’s oldest radio variety program (formerly “A Prairie Home Companion”) with a fiery live style–honed over the years by performing everywhere from a bombed-out hospital in Warsaw, to Lollapalooza, to rapping while standing on top of a wooden chair in South Africa. At all her live shows, she’ll perform the “enormously relatable and compelling … badass” (AV Club) tracks from ‘Chime’ with the “incredible gravitas, presence, and humanity” (NPR All Songs Considered) that’s at the center of the album.
‘Chime’ made its debut in Billboard’s Top 200, and came in at #3 on the Independent and Current Alternative Album charts. Since its release, she has published an essay in The New York Times Magazine (her second), examining the political implications of “The Star-Spangled Banner” in 2018, as part of their 25 songs that made an impact in 2017 issue. An older song, “The Bullpen,” has soundtracked upcoming Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary, “RBG.”
Dessa is also set to participate in this year’s Record Store Day, with the release of “Quinine” (first time on vinyl), on a colored 7-inch. The B-side will include a demo version of “Boy Crazy” (a track from ‘Chime’) and a reading of a short story called “And Now A Short Recess”, which recently appeared in Paper Darts Magazine. The RSD exclusive will be available on April 21.
Dessa’s accomplishments leading up to ‘Chime’ have included contributing to the #1 ‘Hamilton Mixtape’ and collaborating with Lin-Manuel Miranda on the charity single “Almost Like Praying,” developing a protocol with University of Minnesota neuroscientists to try and fall out of love, and writing her first hard-cover book, My Own Devices: True Stories from the Road on Music, Science, and Senseless Love (Dutton, Sept. 18).
